Natural Despite Intrusion
“Natural Despite Intrusion” narrates a story of resilience and newfound strength, weaving together the stark realities of spinal fusion surgery with the grounding elements of nature. The collection features sensitive memories of my experiences with scoliosis and the aftermath of spinal realignment. My curve was a natural occurrence, it would inevitably worsen over time without being corrected with metal rods. The medical field refers to our middle as our “trunk,” the spine like the stagnant core of a tree. Through this juxtaposition, the imagery evokes a sense of similarity amidst contrasting ideas, illustrating a refreshing and hopeful perspective on recovering from a life-altering operation.
The photographs capture the instability of coping with major lifestyle changes after the surgery. While some of the photos portray the vulnerability of healing, others are a powerful and unapologetic tribute to the physical, emotional, and psychological impact of the surgery. These images reflect past limitations, evoking a sense of a foggy, yet enduring memory. From referencing the harsh clinical world to the fragility of recovery, this series finds beauty even when beauty feels lost.
